One of the many jobs I’ve had in my illustrious career was as a cleaner in an old people’s home, where being brown and short, everyone thought I was a boy. A 90-year-old woman flirted with me disturbingly, mistaking me for her long-lost Mexican lover. I’ve worked in clubs/bars, facing death by accidently getting involved with a drug crew of which the less said, the better.
I left art school, specialising in steel sculpture/street furniture, and ran steel workshops, bossing around men twice my size, showing them how to use a welding torch, that was fun! I also made two documentaries for C4, one about time travel, the other philosophy. I made a reasonable but erratic living, hanging out with the other creative odd-bods in our makeshift world. Then I fell in love, had babies and got a job as an NHS speech and language therapist. I’m the 7th of 8 children, from various fathers and mothers – we’re cross generational, mixed race, ridiculously dysfunctional, acrimonious and loving in equal measure, so it was important to me to have a different kind of family e.g. stable!
Throughout it all, I have always written stories. My work is about how people are not always what they seem, how life can hurt so much you want to die and how it can fill you with joy beyond your wildest dreams. My work sets out to challenge patriarchal perceptions of how women are judged and men are honoured, juxtaposing laughter with fear, pathos with joy, throwing the reader into an emotional washing machine, until perceptions change.
